Beauty and the Beast (revisited)

2024

This series of maiolica plates continues Dixon’s interest in the forms and narratives of Italian tin-glazed earthenware, in particular ‘Istoriato’ – maiolica plates depicting scenes from popular classical and biblical stories. Taking inspiration from the sixteenth-century Italian maiolica painters, Dixon’s digitally printed plates ‘mash-up’ classical, biblical and contemporary imagery, taking an allegorical perspective to draw parallels with current issues and events.

Collectively these pieces touch on themes of Iconoclasm/Expulsion/Post-truth/War and Peace, in the context of contemporary conflicts and the ongoing tragedy in the Middle East. The series is shown as part of the exhibition ‘Comtem’Plate’ (2 March–29 April 2024) at Messums West, Wiltshire.
